Kids and Guns: Now and Then

Now:
"Children will pick up a gun if they find it. They can't help themselves, it's what they do. They're curious, and it's your job to make sure their curiosity doesn't hurt them," project representative Linda Corrow said.

And Then:
Know your gun. Know your ammo. Be sure of your backstop. Be sure of your target.

"No one ever got hurt because of the strict discipline," Catalano said. "At the very beginning, Ed Schrop wouldn't even let you touch a gun. It was this way -- or out."

Before long, the boys knew how to clean rifles, take them apart and put them back together.
Linda or Ed...avoidance or education...

Gee, picking a properly qualified firearms authority for young people to listen to sure is difficult...

Mike Freeman Murky on Logic

All that is to say that I'm no stranger to firearms and their use for recreation and hunting. I believe that experience qualifies me to comment on the Second Amendment as it's observed and misused today.
Yeah, I'd say experience with recreational activities makes you a Constitutional scholar, Mike.

Kind of an ironic last name...

Feeling Sheepish

The former mayor of West Lake Hills, caught at Austin Bergstrom International Airport packing a gun, is feeling mighty sheepish tonight.
Judging from his reaction, I'd say you couldn't pick a more appropriate adjective.

It's In the Cards

The boycott card idea for anti-gun businesses has generated a lot more interest and support than I expected. Here are the places now hosting the Word file:

I originally posted it on Rapid Share, as described here.

Commentator Gattsuru posted it here.

Void Where Prohibited posted it here.

Jay.Mac posted it here, and also gave it a nice write-up.

Ditto for Jed, who posted it and added his own observations.

As I said from the start, this concept is not mine--I merely modified an idea being promoted for some time by groups like Ohioans for Concealed Carry. But it's a good idea, and ought to be used, so feel free to modify the cards and make them appropriate for your area (for instance, I can see a real use for one warning gun owners that "Only Schmucks Shop at Schnucks," etc.

If I left anyone out, drop me a note--and if you create your own version of the card, let me know that as well.

We're the Only Ones Dogged Enough

Three police officers were accidentally shot Sunday as one or more officers took aim at a pit bull attacking a member of their crew, police said. All were in stable condition.
Good thing they're "The Only Ones."

Had they been mere citizens, who knows what might have happened?

[Thanks to Jeffersonian, who also gave me the title, and to Jay.Mac, who sent this version.]
