We're the Only Ones Still Counting Enough

Prosecutors Thursday tacked on 16 new counts to the first-degree murder charges against Chicago Police officer Jason Van Dyke in the shooting of Laquan McDonald. [More]
Interesting story all around. Can you imagine what'll happen if just one juror holds out for "Not guilty"?

Forget it Jake, it's Chi-Town.

Is it bizarre to say that 16 charges (one per shot) is "Punitive".

Of course it is!

Is it appropriate?

Hard to accept that it serves the course of "Justice" since a guilty verdict on a single count would make the point.

This was obviously a political, vs a legal, decision.

However, to lend a bit of perspective, some years ago a pair of city policemen in Portland, Oregon unloaded a total of 18 shots (needs link) EACH, at a drunk, semi-comatose "perp" in a downtown commercial doorway in the middle of the night ... and missed him with most of the shots.

One officer was reported to have reloaded his Glock to continue firing, but decided it was not necessary since they couldn't hit a sitting duck at point-blank range.

Some tongue, some cheek, no verifiable facts due to the date of the incident reports.
